Christmas Special 2025

Senior members of Nonnatus House travel to Hong Kong to tackle a crisis at the order’s branch house, and Dr Turner and Shelagh search for May’s birth mother. The work of the Nonnatus team in Hong Kong is threatened, whilst back in Poplar, the young midwives throw a wild party at Nonnatus House.

Christmas Special 2024

The funfair comes to Poplar, adding a burst of colour to the festive season, but there are other less welcome visitors to the borough, including Hong Kong flu and escaped prisoners. Shelagh helps a family battle against appalling poverty, Rosalind comes face to face with an escaped convict, whilst romance is on the cards for Nancy.

Christmas Special 2023 

It’s December 1968. The countdown to Christmas is on, as is the launch of Apollo 8’s moon mission. Sister Monica Joan is convinced this could be her last yuletide and that she will not live to see man walk on the moon.
Meanwhile, as Shelagh and Dr Turner navigate family life, they are unsettled when a parcel arrives from May’s mother in Hong Kong.
Sister Julienne makes a very generous offer to allow Colette to move into Nonnatus House for the foreseeable future. Nancy is thrilled to be able to spend every day with Colette and be more present in her upbringing.

Christmas Special 2022

​It is December 1967, and with Christmas fast approaching, life in Poplar is returning to normal after the terrible train crash.The midwives move the maternity clinic into new premises and are delighted when one of their first patients through the door is Rhoda Mullocks, who the team know well. Rhoda is heavily pregnant and understandably nervous after her last baby was born with limbs affected by thalidomide.Nurse Crane cares for a heavily pregnant single mother, recently released from prison, while Sister Frances is called out to deliver a Sylheti mother’s child in a garment factory in a rough area of Poplar.Meanwhile, Fred decides that Poplar needs to come together to raise money for those families still affected by the train crash and pitches the wonderful idea of a festive talent show – Poplartunity Knocks!

Christmas Special 2021

It's December 1966, and good tidings are in the air. Following a long engagement, Lucille and Cyril are excited about their upcoming nuptials and can't wait to get married on Boxing Day. However, as the day approaches, nothing seems to run smoothly, and the wedding ceremony itself is put in jeopardy. While Nancy focuses on her final midwifery examinations, it is all hands on deck as the Nonnatus team prepare for what will inevitably be a busy Christmas.

Christmas Special 2020

The circus comes to Poplar. Everyone at Nonnatus House is saddened by the sudden departure of Valerie, who has gone to work at the Hope Clinic in South Africa. Trixie's godmother gives her a subscription to a Marriage Bureau so that she won't end up "on the shelf". A fall leaves Sister Monica Joan in hospital with a broken leg. Also, Shelagh meets a familiar face.

Trixie returns to Poplar just as Sister Julienne receives a call from Sister Hilda at the Mother House: Mother Jesu Emmanuel, the Mother Superior of the Order, is terminally ill, and has asked Sister Julienne to return to the Mother House at once with Sister Winifred and Sister Monica Joan, yet Sister Monica Joan conveniently falls ill on the day they're due to leave and they have to leave her behind - it is implied that Sister Monica Joan faked her illness to avoid going to the Mother House. Meanwhile, back in Poplar, Trixie is surprised to learn that expectant mothers are increasingly deserting the services of Nonnatus House in favour of hospital births, but she, Lucille, and Valerie, are called to the aid of an expectant mother who goes into labour in the street.

Christmas Special 2017

The Big Freeze (1962)

Boxing Day brings a large snowfall that covers the country. The adverse weather causes major disruption across Poplar as roads become blocked and pipes freeze. The milk float struggles to make its deliveries and families must queue outside for water from standpipes. Trixie's holiday with Christopher is cancelled due to the snow. Valerie helps Linda and Selwyn, an unmarried couple living in a caravan, prepare for their baby. As the labour progresses, unforeseen complications knock Valerie's confidence in her ability as a midwife.

Christmas Special 2016

The nuns and midwives of Nonnatus House travel to South Africa to save a struggling mission hospital for closure, but there they encounter prejudice from the local authorities, and have to deal with an unhygienic water supply that is running dangerously low. When the only doctor at the clinic is taken ill, things become gravely serious.

 It's Christmastime again, the BBC are planning to televise a carol service in Poplar. Shelagh seeks to get a choir together, but her plans are thrown into chaos when several of the children she has organised fall ill with measles and have to be quarantined. After a heated argument with Sister Evangelina, Sister Monica Joan runs away from Nonnatus House. Whilst searching for her, Fred finds her shoes, and a policeman finds her cap and wimple in a bin. The team at Nonnatus House fear for her safety, especially Sister Evangelina, who feels guilty about how she spoke to her the last time she saw her. When an elderly woman's body is found washed up on the banks of the River Thames, everybody fears the worst. Sisters Julienne and Evangelina go to the mortuary to identify the body, but it's not Sister Monica Joan. Meanwhile, Delia reappears in Patsy's life, and Patsy is delighted to find Delia has got her memories back and has been given a spotless bill of health. However, Delia's mother is against her daughter returning to London because she has been so poorly.

When harsh conditions at a home for expecting unwed mothers are exposed, Chummy and Patsy are required to take over the running of the home, and later convince a young woman she isn't really set on giving up her baby for adoption. Meanwhile, Cynthia wrestles with a calling to become a nun, and an encounter with a former inmate from a mental institution helps her to make up her mind and she leaves midwifery to become a postulant.

Christmas Special 2013

1958 is drawing to a close as the residents of Poplar prepare for Christmas. Festivities are thrown into chaos when an unexploded bomb is discovered close to Nonnatus House, causing mayhem among the nuns, midwives and residents of Poplar just days before Christmas. Everyone is evacuated from their homes, and the midwives of Nonnatus House are tasked with overseeing the rescue centre until the bomb is made safe. Shelagh Mannion, formerly Sister Bernadette, and Dr Turner prepare for their understated wedding. But when Timothy is struck down with a potentially fatal illness, their plans are put on hold while they keep vigil at his bedside

Christmas Special 2012 is the first Christmas special. Nonnatus House is alive with preparations for Christmas. Chummy is arranging a nativity play with the Cub Scouts, Jenny is faced with a difficult case, and a young girl's predicament leads to a big decision.
